As the same as human, dog’s health is very weak during the period of illness, dog’s diet is particularly important during the period of illness. The food for sick dogs needs to be digestible, nutritious and delicious, so what should we do?

In order to supplement protein, it is better to choose animal protein feed, try to reduce the content of crude fiber in food, and supplement sufficient vitamins and inorganic salts. To achieve less feeding and more meals; to reduce the crude fiber, lactose, plant protein and animal connective tissue (such as ligament, tendon, etc.) in the food; to increase cooked eggs, lean meat and other easily digestible, high nutritional value food.

For dogs with fever, when the body temperature rises by 1 degC, the metabolism level generally increases by 10%, which means that the consumption of nutrients in the body is higher than that in normal dogs. In infectious diseases, the synthesis of immunoglobulin and the metabolism of immune system are strengthened. In order to meet the needs of this synthesis, there must be sufficient supply of protein and nutrients.

If some diseases (especially those accompanied by temperature rise) will cause the decrease or stop of saliva secretion, dry mouth, and make it difficult to chew and swallow food, liquid or semi liquid food should be given, and sufficient drinking water should be provided at the same time. Patients with gastrointestinal diseases, especially with vomiting and diarrhea, will have a lot of water excreted with the excreta, if not supplemented in time, will lead to dehydration of the body. Therefore, the dogs with this kind of disease should be supplied with enough water. For sick dogs with vomiting and diarrhea, B vitamins should be supplemented in their food.
