The bulldog, originally from England, is said to have been bred by the combination of a mastiff and a bull terrier. It has been used as a bullfight in history and is known for its fierceness and aggressiveness. Later, the dog bullfight was banned by law, and the breed developed towards pet dogs. Nowadays, this breed is popular with people for its fierce appearance and kind and stable personality. It is a very famous pet dog breed and can also be used as an excellent guard dog.
Later, the Bulldog was used for dog fighting. After 1835, selective breeding took place to change the Bulldog into the flat-faced, compact dog seen today. They were first shown in 1860. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1886 and today they are the fourth most popular breed in the US.
